The call that alerted police is now believed to be a prank after Los Angeles Police Department officers arrived on the scene and found nothing suspicious.
The action star and his family were not at the mansion when the incident occurred Thursday afternoon.
The only ones home were Cruise's security team and personal chef, all of whom had no idea what was going on when the crew of police and SWAT officers appeared.
Cruise is the latest in a growing group of celebrities to be the victim of 'swatting', where someone prank calls the police department saying that there was a criminal incident in process.
Recently a 12-year-old boy was arrested in relation to similar incidents which occurred at the homes of Ashton Kutcher and Justin Bieber.
Scene: LAPD officers responded to a prank call
saying that shots were fired in Tom Cruise's Beverly Hills mansion only
to find out that there was no criminal activity going on and the call
had been a hoax
Insiders have revealed that the suspect lives with his mother in what has been described as an 'incredibly dysfunctional' home and refused to attend school recently because he prefers communicating with other hackers on his computer.
Arrangements are now being made to move him into a more stable foster home.
Though this incident was a hoax, it is not the first time that SWAT teams have descended upon Cruise's neighborhood.
In August 2011, back when the actor was married to Katie Holmes, a burglary was reported on his block and because of the proximity to the multimillionaire's abode, SWAT teams were called.
