A large part
of designing a room is selecting the items that will be going into it. This
includes oil paintings, furniture and accessories. What you choose to place in
there will be items that you will want to be looking at for the years to come.
With that in mind, select designs that make you feel good. Certainly the words
"feel good" may sound like a cliche', but it really is a large part
of being happy with art.
Modern home
interior design has turned towards a contemporary feel. That is to say, someone
who walks in from time to time over a period of years will not find the decor
feeling dated. Instead, the home feels fresh and current every time they
arrive. Colors are muted with maybe a wall painted in a complementary color
other than beige or white. Furniture is conservative in nature with nothing
outrageous such as a zebra striped sofa, maybe a rug, but never the sofa
itself. Interior design has come a long way from the days of decorating a kitchen
in orange and green with a linoleum floor, a la the 1970's.
Using
contemporary oil paintings helps complete the overall look of a room. Consider
a design with sinuous curves, reminiscent of waves hitting a beach. Except the
artist used reds, golds and oranges instead of blue tones, or maybe something
with crazy geometric shapes playing across four separate canvases with colors
that accentuate the room. The eye will delight in the shapes never quite
meeting across the edges. And consider using a display of some sort on a table,
such as a vase of silk flowers, in colors that match the painting. This type of
match-making will bring the colors of the painting into the room.
Whatever it is
you decide to do, do not rush. Take your time selecting the artwork as it is
something you will be looking at for years to come. Make it something that can
be enjoyed by everyone who will be using the room. Resist the urge to go too
bold. You may find yourself relegating the work to the attic.
